Song Info

I can still remember it all too well

I sometimes wish it was still then

Yearning for times gone by

Yearning for years gone by again

It was when I first heard the music

It was when I first felt the longing

Looking back it seems like it was great back then

But was I any closer to belonging?

I can still remember it all too well

I remember the fear I felt inside

Yearning for some kind of shelter

Yearning for some kind of place to hide

It was when I first heard the beat

It was when I first heard James scream

Colliding emotions in my young head

Still never afraid to dream

Written as a tribute to one of the greatest years for popular music.  It featured a borrowed effect from the Eurythmics ‘Sex Crime (1984)’ track where the year ‘1984’ is spoken through a filter.  They’re Doug’s lyrics and give away where his passion for music began; ‘when I first heard James Scream’ is of course, James Brown.  For me, Robert Palmer’s Addicted to love was the fulcrum around which 1986 turned. At the time, it was the greatest pop song I’d ever heard.
